I have massively been getting into podcasts lately. When I say massively, I mean non-stop – when I am getting ready for work, walking to work, at lunch, walking home from work, cleaning, the list goes on! I don’t know if any of you have experienced this when you first start listening, but once you start, you sort of feel like you have to listen to them ALL. So give yourself permission right now to run a bath and listen to your favourite podcast.
That little purple podcast app on my phone used to sit there very lonely, I didn’t even know what a podcast was! Now I am using it on the reg, Spotify is also a good place to find podcasts as well.
If you have no idea what I am talking about, this is what a podcast is, according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary:
Podcast : A program (as of music or talk) made available in digital format for automatic download over the Internet
So a podcast is basically an online radio program, mostly interviews and discussions. That kind of sounds boring, especially when you can watch Ted Talks and so many interesting You Tube videos nowadays, but podcasts are great if you are time poor. They are the perfect multi tasking activity for when you are driving, cleaning, shopping, running errands, at the gym, anytime, anywhere. You don’t need to focus on a screen, so you can go about your business!
There are literally thousands of Podcasts to choose from, if you are not sure where to start, browse and find a category you like, then look at the top charts for that category and start there.
My favourite podcasts are all motivation/business/entrepreneur/inspirational ones – but they are really about key life lessons that you can apply anywhere, not just at work. Many of the guests cross over onto each others podcasts as well, so if you really dig an episode, you can usually find more content on similar podcasts.
What I have been loving lately
A business, personal/professional development listen. This weekly show that breaks down a top-selling non fiction book to it’s core golden nuggets. You get the summary and key points of all of these books broken down into an easy to digest format – no jibber jabber The host has the author of the book on each episode and there are some fantastic insights. Best of all, there are no ads!
Life changing episode: Heaps! Ep #111 The Big Leap with Gay Hendricks
I mean… it’s Oprah. Jokes aside, this gets right into the big questions. Oprah has the clout to get really good guests and the years of interview experience to get down to the nitty gritty, plus she is entertaining. She has also just launched a second podcast which is awesome. Tip: skip the ads with the fast forward 15 seconds button on your lock screen.
Life changing episode: All of them! Ep #66 and #67 - Shawn Achor was so good.
You know that guy who wrote The 4 Hour Work Week? Well, he has a (well known) podcast. This was the very first podcast that I listened to. It features Tim’s personal insights and interviews with the guests speaking about their life and work. Some of the episodes can be quite long, but hey, when you have 2 x speed, why not?
Life changing episode: A lot to choose from but Episode #100 with Brene Brown – love her!
Seth is known for his bestselling books on marketing. He has such an observant and interesting brain and shares his thoughts or ‘riffs’ on a subject for about 15-20 mins before answering two listener questions. Short and sweet, this thought provoking podcast packs a punch. Bonus points for the snappy bass intro.
Life changing episode: I liked They’re not trying to be creepy
Similar to the cut the crap podcast, this is mainly about business and personal growth. Some really cool topics on here, browse though the episodes and see which ones grab your attention.
Life changing episode: Gabby Bernstein on curing yourself from judgment. This one sticks.
Side note: If you love Podcasts, you will love audiobooks. Trust me.
What are some of your favourite podcasts, or episodes that changed your life? Let me know in the comments, I love recommendations.
